Background of the Study
Political discourse in Nigeria is a dynamic arena where language serves as a tool for persuasion, policy explanation, and nation-building. Presidential addresses, as a primary form of political communication, are meticulously crafted to achieve clarity and resonance with diverse audiences. This study examines the syntactic structures employed in these addresses, focusing on how sentence construction, clause coordination, and cohesive devices contribute to overall clarity. The analysis centers on the linguistic strategies that presidents use to simplify complex policy issues and foster public trust. In Nigeria’s multilingual context, ensuring syntactic clarity is crucial for bridging communication gaps and avoiding misinterpretation (Ibrahim, 2023). The study also explores how the interplay between formal syntax and rhetorical devices enhances the effectiveness of presidential speeches. Previous research indicates that syntactic clarity is directly linked to the persuasiveness of political messaging (Olatunde, 2024). By systematically analyzing a corpus of presidential addresses, this research aims to identify common syntactic patterns and evaluate their role in facilitating public understanding and political accountability. The findings will provide insights into the relationship between language structure and political legitimacy (Ibrahim, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Although presidential addresses are pivotal in shaping public opinion, there is limited research on the syntactic clarity of these speeches. Existing studies tend to focus on rhetorical strategies and content rather than the syntactic construction that underpins message delivery. This gap limits our understanding of how syntactic choices affect the clarity and impact of political discourse. Misinterpretations stemming from syntactic ambiguity can undermine public trust and hinder effective governance. This study addresses these shortcomings by analyzing the syntactic structures of Nigerian presidential addresses, thereby contributing to improved communication strategies in political contexts (Olatunde, 2024; Ibrahim, 2023).
Objectives of the Study
To analyze the syntactic structures in presidential addresses.
To assess the impact of syntactic clarity on audience comprehension.
To recommend improvements for political speechwriting.
Research Questions
What syntactic patterns are prevalent in presidential addresses?
How do these patterns contribute to clarity in political discourse?
What improvements can enhance syntactic clarity?
Significance of the Study
The study provides valuable insights into the role of syntax in political communication, offering recommendations for clearer and more effective presidential addresses. Its findings will benefit political strategists, speechwriters, and communication experts by emphasizing the importance of syntactic clarity in building public trust and facilitating policy comprehension (Ibrahim, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to the analysis of syntactic structures in Nigerian presidential addresses and does not extend to other political communications.
